Important Update on Pennies
October 8, 2025
The U.S. Department of the Treasury has decided to end production of the U.S. penny coin. As a result, the Federal Reserve is gradually running out of penny inventory at certain distribution locations.
All other cash and coin services remain unaffected.
What This Means for Customers
- Pennies may become unavailable. As local Federal Reserve coin distribution locations run out of pennies, banks and credit unions may no longer be able to order them.
- Deposits of pennies are still accepted. The Federal Reserve will continue accepting penny deposits, although acceptance may vary by location over time.
Timing of Changes
The Federal Reserve is monitoring penny inventory weekly, and so is Mauch Chunk Trust Company. Changes could take effect as soon as local Federal Reserve supplies are depleted at a given distribution location.
What You Should Do
- Businesses: Begin preparing for reduced penny availability in cash transactions.
- Consumers: Consider using rounding practices or alternative forms of payment.
- Everyone: Stay in contact with your local bank branch for updates on availability.
